If you are on a mission to lose belly fat, you might have considered crunches to burn those fats.

Crunches are great belly fat burning exercises. But you might not get a flatter tummy doing crunches alone; you need to lose the overall body fat first.

Here is what you should know about doing crunches to burn belly fat.

Understand How Burning Belly Fat Works

crunches

As you do crunches to get a slimmer midsection, it is wise to understand how fat burning in the belly works.

Usually, fat accumulation in the belly is a result of consuming more calories than the body burns.

The excess calories can be stored in your belly, arms, thighs, or elsewhere depending on your genes and hormones.

Unfortunately, you cannot spot reduce and lose belly fat alone. To get a flatter tummy, you need to lose weight and overall body fat.

You will not achieve all of these by doing crunches alone. This fat can be lost through a combination of aerobic and resistance training exercises.

Crunches and Belly Fat

Crunches help in firming up and toning the muscles in your belly. They do not burn lots of calories; it is impossible to lose belly fat by doing crunches.

But you should not eliminate them from your fitness routine.

You should combine other exercises to help burn the belly fat first, and crunches will reveal your abdominal muscles.

Some of the exercises that you can do alongside crunches include cardiovascular exercises

These exercises help in raising the metabolism of your body which contributes towards burning fats in your belly.

Running, jogging, swimming, hiking, cycling, burpees, and bear crawls are excellent cardio exercises that can help you burn fats and lose weight.

For best results, it is wise to do at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercises daily.

Besides cardio, you should also consider doing resistance training. This is a fitness routine whereby you use additional weights like dumbbells to build muscle mass.

Lifting weights increases the metabolism of your body, mainly when you are resting. Your body continues to burn fats even when you are not doing any activity.

To lose belly fat through resistance training, you need to do exercises that target the stomach.  Weighted planks, leg raises, and Russian twists are great for burning belly fat.

Embrace A Healthy Diet

healthy diet

Even as you do crunches, you need to eat healthy foods to cut belly fat.

Vegetables, proteins, healthy carbohydrates, and drinking enough water should be part of your diet routine.

You should also consider creating a caloric deficit. This involves reducing the number of calories you consume daily.

Remember, fats accumulate around your tummy because you consume more calories than your body burns.

Therefore, reducing this intake will place you in a better position to get a flatter tummy.

Conclusion

Crunches do not burn belly fat on their own. You need to combine them with other exercises to help cut fat.

A healthy diet, too, helps in losing overall belly fat and weight.
